“It’s the bogons, stupid!”, or
Why Your Site May Be Blocked From Search Engine Indices in All Innocence
(rt) Moved your site to a new ISP? Or set up a new one from scratch – and can’t seem to get either of them indexed by search engines? Even though you’re maintaining a squeaky clean “white hat” operation with not a meta tag keyword stuffing attempt in the world, let alone invisible text or other dated dodgy methods to boost your rankings?
Well, guess what – even if you did employ these and other tricks, you may still not have been banned for all your evil ways! It’s the bogons, stupid!
Bogons are hitherto unused – but nevertheless strongly abused – IPs blocked from site access by net admins because spammers have been drawing upon them for bogus return addresses. If you happen to hit on one of these by chance, your site can be as squeaky clean as your mother-in-law could ever have wanted it to be – yet you might still be subject to what is fondly termed “the search engines’ wrath”.
In an article by Ian McAnerin and Mike Churchill titled “Bogons Ate My Web Site. An unforeseen risk of changing ISPs” you will find the whole process explained in all detail and what to do about it. It will also tell you where to check your IP to see if it’s on the widely distributed “official” bogon list. Well worth a read!
Which you can do here:

For a linguistic take on the term “bogon” (which isn’t really quite as clearly defined as our authors make it out to be and actually derives from “bogus”), see this jargon page: → Bogons defined
Learn (among several other things you probably never even knew you didn’t want to know) that:
The bogon has become the type case for a whole bestiary of nonce particle names, including the “clutron” or “cluon” (indivisible particle of cluefulness, obviously the antiparticle of the bogon) and the futon (elementary particle of randomness, or sometimes of lameness).
Futon = “lameness”, now don’t we love that!
