fantomTip:
Don’t Optimize!
(rt) Experienced SEOs have seen them all: clients entering the search market being under-budgeted (“a hundred bucks a month should be ample”), overhyped (“make us rank #1 for ’software’ in all major engines”), impatient to a fault (“and yes, better do it by Monday!”), utterly clueless (“my site’s all in Flash and no, you can’t change a thing because it would hurt our corporate image”), overconfident (“sure we’ll beat IBM and Microsoft, our product’s much better and 50 cents cheaper”) etc. etc. – the list could go on indefinitely. And more often than not, actually taking them on will end in little else but blood, sweat and tears for all parties involved. So ain’t we havin’ fun!
Well, in a very readable piece on SEO Chat titled “Knowing When Not to Optimize ” Israeli SEO Itai Levitan expounds on SEO clients from hell every search marketing consultant should better stay clear from unless you’re of a decidedly hardened masochist inclination.
As a professed “white hat”, Levitan expectably fails to mention that a good many of these issues (e. g. untouchable design, layout and content on clients’ sites) can easily be tackled by cloaking / IP delivery, but that doesn’t invalidate his points. Neither does he address the necessity of educating your clients, preferably before you sign a contract to keep everyone happy throughout.
Still, sound “white hat” advice, born out of a pile of bitter experiences and regrets – good educative material, well recommended!
