The Ugly World of SEO
(rt) In his article “BadRank & the Ugly Side of SEO”, renowned SEO expert Aaron Wall lists some of the uglier aspects tarnishing the search engine optimization and marketing industry’s image: from internecine forum flame wars (usually of the “white hat” vs. “black hat” type), bogus SEO forums, crappy hit-and-run “SEO services” via self-serving, utterly useless “SEO verification” sites to “SEO Professionals Interest Organizations” interested in everything but their members’s concerns – viewed in aggregate, it’s not a pretty sight at all.
Of course, the search engines being part and parcel of the overall searchotope, they, too, are contributing blithely to what is essentially a highly self-destructive industry trend: dumping tons of innocent web sites only to get rid of a handful of spammers; making state secrets of their ranking algorithms, their user demographics and their revenue sharing parameters; issuing misleading, untruthful “webmaster guidelines”, promoting click fraud big time if only by keeping advertisers in the dark about the risks they’re incurring; poaching partner agents’ clients; refusing to address major issues such as 302 pagejacking; infringing trademarks and copyrights; pursuing double standards left, right and center (vide, for example, their cloaking policies …) – it’s certainly not theirs to throw the first stone at anyone but themselves.
A bit of a depressing read but hard to ignore. Find it here:
