Click Fraud – And How Not To Fight It
(rt) A thread on ↗ Buy.com …, goes after bad ad clicks’”>→ SearchEngineWatch Forum points to a patent recently filed by Scott Blum of → ↗ Buy.com ….
The idea is to direct clicking users to an intermediate landing page where they are expected to perform some non-automatable task (e. g. enter a code displayed in graphical form, what’s commonly called a captcha in the blogosphere). Of course, it’s a bit ironic that the good old doorway page should be upgraded to this kind of comeback.
Comments so far haven’t been too enthused: while this technology may indeed reduce automated click fraud, it will to all probability turn off visitors and buyers big time, potentially nipping this business model right in the bud. Even if it were to be implemented on a larger scale, fraudsters would simply tap cheap human resources (preferably in the Third World) to overcome these obstacles as they reportedly have been doing from India for years now.
