Content Management Systems As an SEO Issue
(rt) Enquiro CEO Gord Hotchkiss has published a six-page white paper on the issues involved in getting content management system (CMS) driven web sites ranked decently in search engines. He points out:
IT and Marketing executives often fail to realize that their internal content management system (CMS) may be sabotaging their search engine efforts.
If you download the PDF file, be advised that you will still require a web browser with Internet access because before you’re able to read it you’ll have to give them your name, address, corporate data, etc.
The actualy advice presented in the white paper will hardly come as a surprise to experienced SEOs, but it’s quite sound as far as it goes: create unique meta tags, build static pages (which many CMS setups won’t allow easily, unfortunately), structure your directories and navigation elements, avoid broken links (very common with dynamic pages) etc.
So if you’re considering switching to a CMS site and still keeping it halfway search engine friendly, you’d be well advised to heed these tips, basic and rusdimentary though they may seem.
