Arab Internet Going Strong, VoIP in Dubai Crappy
(rt) Gulf Daily News – The voice of Bahrain (the out of the way publications you get to read in search – isn’t it great?) reports that according to a study conducted by Jordan based Arab Advisers Group titled “International Connectivity in the Arab World” the Internet is experiencing strong growth rates throughout the Arab world. This is expected to lead to a big time slashing of costs and charges, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) being the leader of the pack, closely followed by Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The group plans to host its second Media and Telecommunications Convergence Conference in Jordan on June 11 and 12.

On a slightly different note, the UAE’s only net provider → Etisalat seems to have recently blocked user access to the world’s largest VoIP provider → Skype according to Skype Journal:
This prevents users of the Skype internet telephone system from buying minutes to call at highly discounted rates, of special importance to the many expatriates who work in Dubai.
It is not yet clear whether the motive for this blockade is economic (Etisalat holds the local telephone monopoly) or political – in any case it’s not too conducive to the Arab world’s “coming of age” Internet wise.

[Update 2005-05-08]
Seems that it isn’t Etisalat that’s blocking Skype out of their own accord but the UAE government, as a company spokesman claims, saying it is currently illegal in the UAE. Some inconsistency to this story, though, as Etisalat is in the process of developing and implementing their own VoIP solution. → Read Skype Journal’s follow up message here.
