Google Optimization in a Mere Nutshell
(rt) In what comes along almost as a mere aside, Michael Martinez presents a highly condensed, no frills take on optimizing for Google over at High Rankings Search Engine Optimization Forum.
Here is what he says:
The algorithm is fairly easy to manipulate. You build up a lot of links. Most people understand that much. But what they don’t understand, generally, is that Google distinguishes link popularity from relevance. Relevance is determined first, and it can be established through off-page factors (inbound link anchor text), although it’s easier to establish relevance through on-page factors (including using your outbound links to show what you associate your content with) and then reinforce it with inbound links. You don’t need nearly as many inbound links as most people believe, for most searches.
Some searches are so hyperoptimized you pretty much have to go with total link building, but those searches are relatively few and far between.
This sums it up so neatly, there’s little if anything to add.
