Busting the Relevant Link Myth
Years ago I always enjoyed reading Michael Martinez’s postings in various forums – and after discovering his SEO Theory – SEO Theory and Analysis Blog – SEO Theory: Search engine optimization theory focuses on algorithm analysis, Web community relationship analysis, SEO practices and techniques, and related topics such as industry news, etc. upon returning to the blogosphere recently myself, I was thrilled to nurture a pet foregone conclusion of mine: namely that this one would qualify for my personal must read selection. Nor was I disappointed.
Michael’s stubbornly contrarian no-nonsense approach to SEO, his command of the relevant facts and the numbers to back up his views, his shrewd assessment of the logical processes and systemic rules governing search technology, his sober reductionism (yes, that too) and his dry, for many non-mercurial minds probably quite imperceptible humor have always proved a reliable source of enjoyment. And even if we may not always agree on every finery, this is one SEO artist reading whom will never be a waste of your time.
Anyway, here’s a recent posting of his everyone seriously into SEO should read and digest. Like so much of his stuff, The relevant link myth is bound to ruffle a few feathers in that same SEO community he so studiously disavows. But once again: Agree or disagree with him as much as you will – as long as you dig deeper into the matter, rather than merely chewing the gurus’ time worn cud, you’re bound to learn an important thing or two in the process, things you would probably have missed out on otherwise.
Essentially, he’s revealing (well, re-uncovering, actually) a very fundamental concept all black hat SEOs (and no: I’m not implying that he’s one himself) have known about and gleefully leveraged for ages: Links do count, yes; and so does their “relevance” – but not in the nonsensical and utterly illogical way most people in SEO seem to have adopted in a concerted operation of building their cargo cult of collective techno superstitions.
’nuff said – go check it out or omit to do so at your own peril.
