Google to Treat Underscores in URLs as Word Separators
Stephan Spencer reports on C|Net that GoogleGuy Matt Cutts announced during his speech at WordCamp2007 that underscores in URLs will now (or, at least, soon) be treated as word separators by Google – a new development which should impact your future link building efforts, too.
Up until now, separating keywords in your page file names was frowned upon because Google would only view hyphens as “real” separators – a major issue for bloggers posting on the TypePad and Movable Type platforms.
He also claimed that Google treats URLs with a query string the same as static URLs provided you don’t have more than two or three parameters in the URL. Moreover, file extensions don’t affect Google rankings, according to Cutts, and neither does directory deep structure.
