Searching in Nomad Mode: Enter Boopsie, a New Mobile Search Engine
When you’re traveling or running errands, far from the office desktop or in lack of that nifty laptop, having to make do with your smart phone’s standard search function usually sucks bigtime. Try as they will, neither Google nor Yahoo! nor any other major contenders seem to be getting it right.
Enter Boopsie – a new mobile search engine with an attitude, starting with their claim of being “the fastest mobile search”, and yes, it’s free.
We know you’re constantly on the go, trying to check scores, stocks and weather, find phone numbers, restaurants and movie times.
We also know your time is premium. The last thing you need is to wade through a hundred search engine results on a display screen the size of a postage stamp!
Too true. So how are they getting around this issue? Basically, by offering a channel structure, which really makes it a kind of directory if not by name.
Channels are regularly expanded. Their current selection includes: Encyclopedia Britannica, Wikipedia (in English, French, German, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Chinese and Japanese), Facebook Friends, USA Today, Plaxo Contacts, Google (Gmail, Calendar, Finance and Suggest), Amazon (Books and Grocery), Area Code Lookup, Podlinez, City Search (Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle and Silicon Valley), and a slew of others.
Boopsie is compatible with all web-enable devices including Blackberry, Apple’s iPhone and some (though not all) Palm models. (My trusted Lifedrive doesn’t qualify, doh, but then Palm’s no longer supporting that one anymore either. At least my my brand new 3G MDA Vario III, which runs Windows Mobile, should work – will be sure to try it out soon once I get to it.)
