Gah - Google Browser Launched
Just when we thought the browser wars had finally (and deservedly) gone down the drain, here, straight from the Department of Needless Features at the Googleplex, finally comes Google Chrome in, you guessed it, beta.
Essentially a clonal mix between Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox 2+, it offers such exciting “new” features as tabbed browsing (woohoo!), address bar auto completion (you don’t say!), fewer buttons (wow, how innovative!), some phishing protection (now where did we steal that idea again, hm?), and little else (duh). The single blessing of dubious value being that it’s open source. (That’s right, let the punters do the grunt work…)
So is it fast at least? Yes - and little wonder, too, seeing that it’s almost featureless by today’s standards. After all, Firefox and Opera used to be veritable speed demons, too, until people started overloading them with slews of plug-ins and add-ons
Personally, I’d even prefer Apple’s Safari for Windows, if only for its fairly slick design, no matter how much it sucks in terms of usability and compatibility. No way I’m going to waste time with this pot ugly thingie - though there’s hardly a way around the fact that Google’s marketing prowess will effectively push this eminently dispensable Johnny-come-lately gimmick onto the masses’ desktops.
After which, and we’ll happily bet the farm on that, in comes - tarah! - Big G’s Super Duper Do-No-Evil Monetization Machine to clutter it up with all sorts of nifty “free” spyware tools to promote their devil’s mix of data mining apps to creep into every nook of our private and corporate lives.
Anyway, if you feel you’ve really got some time to burn and refuse to get a life instead, you can download it here: Google Chrome
